Residential Services
St. Joseph’s is deeply committed to providing the highest quality services to these most vulnerable people who have been entrusted into its care. We provide year-round residential programming 24 hours a day by three shifts of staff. Recognizing that achieving one’s maximum potential requires both appropriate treatment and emotional support, we encourage and welcome family and friends to visit. Residential care is available through two programs.
St. Joseph’s Intermediate Care Facilities
St. Joseph’s Intermediate Care Facilities for persons with mental retardation (ICF/MR) offer residential care to 99 children and young adults who have a diagnosis of severe or profound mental retardation, physical challenges and medical issues. St. Joseph’s maintains three ICF/MR sites, the largest of which is the main center, located in Scranton. This facility offers homelike living units and a fully equipped therapy building with a heated pool. St. Joseph’s two other Intermediate Care Facilities are specially adapted, ranch-style homes in residential neighborhoods. Having a maximum of six residents per home, family-style routines and outings are readily incorporated into daily schedules. The primary thrust of the ICF/MR program is hope coupled with action—intense, continuing, positive action. The ongoing therapeutic regimen known as “active treatment” is provided by direct care and program staff, along with nurses and a full team of therapists.

The Community Living Arrangements Program
The Community Living Arrangements Program (CLA or group homes) were St. Joseph’s first attempt at an alternative to large congregate living for individuals with special needs. The 11 CLAs offer persons who are diagnosed with mental retardation and often physically challenged the opportunity to live and learn with their peers in a real home environment. Staff provide a stable and supportive atmosphere for the three to six individuals living in each home.
The learning components of this program are orchestrated through Individual Support Plans. Specific plans are person centered and based on interests and abilities, but there are some common areas of emphasis: personal care programs, home routines and community integration are all important aspects of the Support Plans.
